James Guelich

Jim was a force of nature: they called him the Energizer Bunny. Known for his inability to sit still, his infectious great smile, and his knack for being loved by everyone he met.

Born with an adventurous spirit, obtaining an Associate’s Degree from Burlington County College. James served in the Navy before embarking on an entrepreneurial journey. In the late 1960’s, he founded Granddad’s Refinishing in Mt. Laurel, a testament to his hands-on approach and love of antiques & woodworking. His skill in antique restoration was legendary, so much so that his own 1800s home showcased his remarkable talents. It was through this business that he met his beloved wife, Mary Ann (Sandy), whom he affectionately called “Toots.” She started at Granddad’s and from there, as they say, it was history. They were married for 30 years, a second marriage for both, a testament to a deep and enduring love.

Jim’s passions were as boundless as his energy. An avid cook, he amassed over 40 cookbooks, delighting in preparing dishes like blowfish (which he caught himself!), wings, and ribs. His television viewing habits leaned towards the thrilling, with favorites like “Deadliest Catch” and “Swamp People,” alongside Fox News. Travel was another significant part of his life, with countless adventures in his RV alongside Sandy. They explored the American West, with Yellowstone National Park holding a special place in his heart, though Acadia National Park also captivated him, as did trips to Oklahoma.

Beyond his professional life and love for his wife Toots, Jim was a dedicated family man. He shared his love for the outdoors with his grandchildren, taking them saltwater fishing on his boat, the “Portless,” and crabbing on a smaller vessel. His hobbies reflected his zest for life: a keen saltwater fisherman, a hunter, a downhill skier, and a water skier. In his younger years, he also enjoyed riding motorcycles.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Ann (Sandy); his children: Paul (Maria) and Katie; his stepdaughter, Melissa Bedell; his cherished grandchildren: John, Ryan, and Justin; and his siblings: Terry and Nanette (Jim). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and his mother-in-law Marie Walker who will deeply miss his vibrant presence.

Come celebrate 78 great years Wednesday, July 9, 2025, 6-8 p.m., and Thursday, July 10, 2025, 11-12 PM, at Sweeney Funeral Home, 337 Bridgeboro Street, Riverside, NJ where there will be a noon service. Interment Brigadier William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in James’s memory.
